Running vs. Rowing

For my cardio, I decided to change things up a bit and went to the rowing machines. I normally run 6 miles in an hour on a hill program with inclines up to 10 degrees. I can do this with very controlled breathing, going about 1 breath for every 3-4 steps. Now with the rowing machine I'm obviously going too quickly. After 25 minutes I was kicked. You definitely get more of a full body workout with the rowing. I went about 33 strokes per minute for a total of 5200 meters. Anyone have any idea for a number that would give me the same length of workout I get from my running? I plan on changing it up every week. One to keep things different and two to lessen the pounding on the joints. The elliptical is just something I won't be doing.

Rowing wont put much pressure if any on your joints.
Your body adapts to an increase in physical activity in a very specific way, whilst you may have cardiovascular endurance from running it will not translate into the same levels of fitness when you are doing the rowing. That's why when people have their VO2max tested it is recommended that they are testing in a way that is most similar to their sport of choice.

www. concept2. com best rower there is. Used by all the college rowing teams. Rowing gives a much better workout than anything! Go to the site and read up on it, pretty unreal.:money8:

It's funny you mention that site. I found out about it a week ago and have been going along with their beginning program and logging my rows. Definitely good stuff. Just have to watch out if your back is a little off since I obviously won't have perfect form being a beginner.
